AARON TAN BA Hons (Ceramic Design) U.K.
Singapore Potter
Function has often been closely associated with my creations as I work mostly on pottery making. Nevertheless I frequently form with a sculptural approach to clay.
I am fond of working the clay on the potter’s wheel. “Throwing” a large bowl or plate has always been an exciting challenge, -maybe that is the reason I keep going at it. I have a preference for big round pots when dabbling with surfaces and tactile treatment. It is such a joy, -well at least for me, to throw large full forms and combing the surface, altering the form and adding texture as the object of my attention changes whilst I work on the spin. And apart from large plates, slab-work pieces provides the next ideal alternative as a canvass for painting and also for working with this approach.
The technique of altering thrown forms suits my purpose as it takes away the monotony of symmetry which is inherent in all wheel work.
The process of altering a form at various stages of drying is also stimulating and pleasurable as I can mould and respond to the clay with an immediate and spontaneous touch to shape and surface. In a way this approach with clay also draws a parallel with my approach to both my personal life and professional development as an artist. Having considered the journey, I make conscious decisions to have abit of fun whenever possible; I keep it simple, whilst making interesting interaction with my materials..
